Pests at home? What to ask before you hire pest control

Identify the problem, ask the right safety questions, and avoid contracts that are hard to cancel.

First steps

  1. Identify the pest. Take a clear photo; termites, ants, rodents and bed bugs need different treatments.
  2. Remove easy attractions: food left out, standing water, gaps around doors and pipes.
  3. Keep children and pets away from any product until a professional advises you.

Questions to ask

  • Licensed applicator in this state?
  • Which products, and are they safe around children and pets?
  • One-time treatment or a contract? How do you cancel?
  • Is there a re-treatment guarantee if the pests come back?

What drives the price

The type of pest, how far the infestation has spread, the size of the property, and one-time versus recurring service.

Red flags

  • Long contracts that auto-renew without clear cancellation terms.
  • Claims that "only today" pricing applies.
  • Treatment without an inspection first.
